100th Scripps National Spelling Bee Advances to Quarterfinals as Two Maryland Spellers Depart

The competition has narrowed its field of 243 entrants to around 100 quarterfinalists competing for $50,000 in prize money.

Overview

  • Quarterfinals begin May 28 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center following the elimination of two Maryland spellers in the preliminaries.
  • The field originally included 243 spellers representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and five overseas nations.
  • The competition format features a traditional spelling round, a multiple-choice vocabulary round and a 40-question written test.
  • The champion will receive a $50,000 cash prize plus reference libraries from Merriam-Webster and Encyclopedia Britannica.
  • Preliminaries and quarterfinals are streaming on Bounce XL with semifinals and finals scheduled May 29–30 on the ION channel.
