18-Month-Old Killed, Mother Injured After Car Hits Sleeping Family in Mumbai

A car lost control and ran over a homeless family sleeping on a footpath in Wadala, killing a toddler and seriously injuring his mother.

The accident occurred around 12:30 AM on Sunday on Balaram Khedekar Marg in Wadala, Mumbai, when a car swerved onto a footpath and struck a family sleeping there.
The victim, 18-month-old Vardan Londhe, was pronounced dead at Wadia Hospital, while his mother, Priya Londhe, sustained a fractured shoulder and is undergoing treatment at KEM Hospital.
The family had been forced to sleep on the footpath after their slum dwelling was demolished, leaving them homeless and without alternative housing under a municipal rehabilitation scheme.
The driver, Kamal Vijay Riya, 46, claimed he lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a collision with another car; police have ruled out intoxication but are awaiting blood test results.
Riya has been arrested and charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence and endangering human life, with investigations ongoing.
