19th Century Quarantine Hospital and Cemetery Found Off Florida Coast

Archeological remains of a 19th century hospital and cemetery used to isolate yellow fever victims have been discovered submerged off the coast of Key West, Florida.
The hospital and cemetery, used from 1890 to 1900, were located on a now-submerged island and served as a quarantine facility for Fort Jefferson.
Dozens of people, mostly U.S. soldiers, are believed to have been buried at the cemetery, though only one grave has been identified.
The identified grave belongs to John Greer, a laborer who died in 1861 while working at Fort Jefferson.
The discovery highlights untold histories in Dry Tortugas National Park and shows the threat of climate change to resources in the region.
