Overview

  • Forecasters predict 13 to 19 named storms, six to ten hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes during the June-to-November season.
  • Storm surge is responsible for roughly half of hurricane deaths since 1970 and can cause deadly flooding hundreds of miles inland, officials warn.
  • Residents are urged to assemble a seven-day emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, flashlights and medical supplies and to reinforce doors, windows and garage doors.
  • Families should finalize evacuation routes — including arrangements for pets and special-needs members — and identify nearby shelters or safe inland destinations.
  • Elevated ocean temperatures raise the threat of rapid intensification, meaning storms can strengthen by 35 mph within 24 hours and shorten preparation time.
