$3.5M Settlement for Boy Who Witnessed Aunt's Fatal Police Shooting

The Fort Worth City Council approved the settlement for Zion Carr, who was eight when he witnessed the fatal shooting of his aunt, Atatiana Jefferson, by a police officer in their home.

  • Zion Carr, who was eight years old when he witnessed his aunt, Atatiana Jefferson, being fatally shot by a police officer in their home, has been awarded a $3.5 million settlement by the Fort Worth City Council.
  • The officer, Aaron Dean, was responding to a nonemergency call from a neighbor who reported that the front door to Jefferson's home was open late at night.
  • Dean, who did not identify himself as a police officer, shot Jefferson through a window after she took out her gun, believing there was an intruder in the backyard.
  • Dean was later convicted of manslaughter in Jefferson’s death and sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison.
  • Part of the settlement will cover Zion’s current needs and living expenses, and a savings plan will be established to pay for his college education.
