Aboriginal man, 24, dies in custody after police restraint at Alice Springs supermarket

Overview

  • Security staff confronted the man after reports he was placing items down the front of his clothing
  • Two plainclothes officers restrained him in aisle four and he became unresponsive during the intervention
  • CPR was performed on site and St John’s Ambulance transported him to Alice Springs Hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 2:20 pm
  • Police established a crime scene at the Coles centre and closed it for the rest of Tuesday
  • A senior commissioned officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry and a report is being prepared for the coroner
