Academy Sports Pays $2.5M Settlement Over Illegal Gun Sales to Serial Killer

The sporting goods chain sold weapons to a straw buyer who gave them to Todd Kohlhepp, a felon serving life for killing seven people.

  • Academy Sports Outdoors is paying $2.5 million to the families of three victims of serial killer Todd Kohlhepp.
  • The settlement comes after a lawsuit accused the sporting goods chain of selling guns to a straw buyer who then gave them to Kohlhepp, a felon who couldn't legally purchase weapons.
  • Dustan Lawson, the straw buyer, signed paperwork stating the 12 guns and five silencers he bought between 2012 and 2016 were for himself, but then gave them to Kohlhepp.
  • Lawson has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison.
  • Kohlhepp is serving life without parole after pleading guilty in 2017 to killing seven people.
