Acclaimed Mystery Author Anne Perry, Once Imprisoned for Teen Murder, Dies at 84

  • Anne Perry, a British crime novelist who sold more than 26 million books despite spending five years in prison as a teenager for murdering her friend's mother, died on Tuesday in Scotland. She was 84.
  • Ms. Perry served her sentence in New Zealand, her home at the time, after she and a friend were convicted of bludgeoning the friend's mother to death when Ms. Perry was 15.
  • Released at 21, Ms. Perry moved to Scotland, changed her name from Juliet Hulme to Anne Perry, and began a prolific writing career.
  • Her mysteries explored Victorian society and ethics, and won her an Edgar Award, but her early crime cast a shadow over her reputation.
  • Ms. Perry never married and outlived her accomplice and friend in the murder. She had homes in Scotland, Portmahomack and Hawaii, where she died.
