Ancient Christian Codex to be Auctioned for Up to $3.8 Million

The Crosby-Schoyen Codex, dating back to 250-350 AD, contains early biblical texts and is a significant artifact from the dawn of Christianity.

  • The Crosby-Schoyen Codex, a book written in Coptic on papyrus around 250-350 AD, is expected to fetch between $2.6 million and $3.8 million at a London auction in June.
  • Written at one of the first Christian monasteries in Egypt, the codex is one of the oldest books in existence and contains the earliest known texts of two books of the Bible.
  • The codex was written by a single scribe over a 40-year period and is preserved behind plexiglass.
  • Previously owned by the University of Mississippi and Norwegian collector Dr. Martin Schoyen, the codex is part of the Schoyen Collection.
  • Its preservation is attributed to Egypt’s dry climate, making it a rare find among Christian manuscripts from the 3rd and 4th centuries.
