Anti-Muslim, Anti-Palestinian Hate Crimes Surge in U.S.

CAIR reports a 178% increase in complaints in the last quarter of 2023, following a Hamas attack on Israel.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), incidents of hate and discrimination against Muslims and Palestinians in the U.S. increased by 178% in the last three months of 2023, with the organization receiving 3,578 complaints.
The increase in hate crimes and discrimination followed a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Among the incidents reported, the highest proportion of complaints were related to employment discrimination, followed by hate crimes and education discrimination.
Two notable incidents of violence against Arabs and Muslims included the murder of a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy in Chicago and the shooting of three Palestinian college students in Vermont.
CAIR officials have called on American political leaders to demand an end to bias and discrimination, emphasizing that events in the Middle East have direct impacts on communities in the U.S.
