Apple Declares Last MacBook Pro with Optical Drive Obsolete
The mid-2012 13-inch model, withdrawn from sale in 2016, is no longer supported by the company.
- Apple has declared the mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro, the last of its laptops with an optical drive, as obsolete.
- The company considers a product obsolete if it was last sold more than seven years ago; the mid-2012 MacBook Pro was withdrawn from sale in October 2016.
- The declaration means that any MacBook Pro with an optical drive is no longer supported by Apple.
- Apple still sells an external optical drive, the SuperDrive, which can read and burn CDs and DVDs, but it hasn't been updated in a long time and requires an adapter to use with modern Macs.
- The mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro has not been supported by the latest versions of macOS for several years, with support ending with the release of macOS Big Sur in 2020.
