Army Employee Accused of $100M Fraud Scheme

Janet Yamanaka Mello allegedly used stolen funds to buy luxury homes, cars, and jewelry.

  • Janet Yamanaka Mello, a former civilian financial program manager at Fort Sam Houston, is accused of defrauding the Army of over $100 million.
  • Mello allegedly set up a shell company, Child Health and Youth Lifelong Development (CHYLD), to siphon funds from the 4-H Military Partnership grants between 2016 and 2022.
  • The funds were allegedly used to purchase 31 properties in multiple states, 78 vehicles including luxury and vintage cars, and expensive jewelry and clothing.
  • Mello was indicted on 10 counts including mail fraud, engaging in criminal transactions, and aggravated identity theft.
  • If convicted, Mello could face a maximum of 142 years in prison. She was released without bail and has a Jan. 19 deadline to strike a plea deal or face jury selection and trial on Feb. 12.
