Australian School Boulder Revealed to Contain Record Number of Dinosaur Footprints

The fossil, unnoticed for 20 years, features 66 tracks from nearly 50 dinosaurs dating back 200 million years to the Early Jurassic period.

  • The boulder, located in Biloela State High School's foyer, contains 66 fossilized footprints from 47 individual dinosaurs, the highest concentration found on a single slab in Australia.
  • The tracks were made by Anomoepus scambus, a small, plant-eating dinosaur that walked on two legs and lived during the Early Jurassic period.
  • The boulder was donated to the school in 2002 by a geologist who retrieved it from a nearby mine, but its significance was only recently identified by paleontologist Anthony Romilio.
  • The discovery provides rare insights into dinosaur behavior, movement, and abundance in Australia, where no skeletal remains from this period have been found.
  • Discussions are underway to relocate the boulder to a public venue, while additional fossils in the region are being studied for further discoveries.
