  • Sasha Filipenko, who resides outside of Belarus, is a well-known novelist and a leading voice against Lukashenko's regime.
  • The Lukashenko government has been suppressing dissent and independent media since large-scale protests erupted in 2020, following a disputed presidential election that saw Lukashenko secure another term.
  • The crackdown has resulted in the detention of around 35,000 people, with thousands reportedly beaten. Many key opposition figures, including Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya who ran against Lukashenko in the election, have fled the country.
