Biden Administration Warns States of High Medicaid Losses Among Children

Over three million children have lost Medicaid coverage this year, with Florida, Texas, and Georgia experiencing the largest drops.

  • Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra has sent letters to the governors of nine states warning them about unusually high Medicaid coverage losses among children.
  • The nine states, which include Florida, Georgia, and Texas, account for approximately 60% of the decline in enrollment in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) through September.
  • Child Medicaid enrollment has declined by more than three million this year, with Florida, Texas, and Georgia experiencing the largest drops in child Medicaid enrollment nationwide.
  • The Biden administration has called on state officials to ease transfers of children from Medicaid to CHIP, reduce call center wait times, and adopt special rules to streamline procedures for keeping children enrolled in Medicaid.
  • The Biden administration has also extended waivers, nearly 400 of which have been approved so far, through 2024 to ease the eligibility-checking process.
