Billions of Cicadas Set to Emerge in Rare Double Brood Event This Spring

For the first time in over two centuries, Brood XIII and Brood XIX cicadas will surface simultaneously, covering parts of the U.S. with their presence.

  • In Spring 2024, following the April 8 total solar eclipse, two broods of periodical cicadas, Brood XIII and Brood XIX, will emerge for the first time in 221 years, overlapping geographically.
  • Brood XIX, known as the 'Great Southern Brood,' will cover much of the southeastern U.S., while Brood XIII, the 'Northern Illinois brood,' will emerge in northern Illinois and nearby areas.
  • The cicadas are expected to start emerging in the last week of April in the southern U.S., with the emergence moving northward as soil temperatures reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Experts assure that the double emergence will not lead to a 'cicada apocalypse,' but rather a unique natural event that could become a 'generational memory.'
  • The Cicada Safari app, created by Dr. Gene Kritsky, enables the public to document cicada sightings, aiding in research and understanding of these periodical insects.
