Bloomberg Donates 14,000 Roman Artefacts and £20M to London Museum
The artefacts, unearthed at a Roman temple site, will feature in the new London Museum opening in Smithfield in 2026.
- A collection of over 14,000 Roman artefacts, including Britain's largest collection of Roman tablets and the first written reference to London, has been donated to the London Museum.
- The artefacts were discovered between 2012 and 2014 during the construction of Bloomberg's European headquarters at the site of a 3rd century AD Roman temple to Mithras in the City of London.
- Bloomberg Philanthropies also contributed £20 million, marking the largest private donation in the museum's history, to support the development of its new premises.
- The London Museum's new home in the historic Smithfield market buildings is set to open in 2026, with plans to attract over two million visitors annually.
- The project emphasizes sustainability, community involvement, and the creation of apprenticeships, aiming to establish the museum as a cultural and economic cornerstone for London.
