Body of Missing Florida Army Veteran and Fitness Instructor Found

Eiffel Gilyana, who served as a translator in the U.S. Army and escaped ISIS threats, was found days after his disappearance during a kayaking trip.

  • Eiffel Gilyana, a 46-year-old Army veteran and fitness instructor, went missing while kayaking near the St. Augustine Inlet in Florida and his body was found days later.
  • Gilyana was not wearing a life jacket at the time of his disappearance and his canoe was found split in half.
  • The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search after 48 hours, but volunteers continued the search, eventually finding Gilyana's body north of Vilano Beach.
  • Gilyana, an Iraq native, served as a translator in the U.S. Army from 2003 to 2009 and moved to the United States to escape ISIS threats.
  • He was a respected member of his community, working as a fitness and wellness director with the Jewish Community Alliance and serving as a health and wellness adviser for Task Force Hydro 1, a nonprofit group that works with veterans and emergency workers.
