- On May 22 at around 5 pm local time, lifeguards pulled Edward James Watson Massey from a San Miguel de Abona hotel pool after he went into cardiac arrest
- A nurse guided a caller by phone to a defibrillator while first responders and self-identified doctors performed resuscitation until two ambulances and a medical helicopter arrived
- Despite advanced life support efforts, the four-year-old from Co Down, Northern Ireland, was pronounced dead at the scene
- The Civil Guard has opened a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy
