Britney Spears Filmed "Overprotected" Music Video Shortly After Justin Timberlake's Breakup Text, Confirms Director

Director Chris Applebaum recalls Spears's strong performance after heartbreaking breakup news, her Grammy-nominated "Overprotected" video showing Timberlake he "just lost the best thing he ever had".

• Britney Spears was shooting the music video for 'Overprotected' when she received a breakup text from then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. The director, Chris Applebaum, noticed when Spears wasn't ready for the next scene and that something was wrong.
• Instead of ending the music video shoot, Spears decided to push through and in about 10 to 15 minutes later, she delivered an extraordinary and strong performance. The song ended up getting a Grammy nomination and landed on the Billboard Hot 100.
• In Spears' memoir 'The Woman In Me', she provided a deeper insight about her relationship with Timberlake, where she detailed getting the breakup text from him while on the 'Overprotected' music video set.
• Spears also revealed in her memoir that she had an abortion when she was with Timberlake, which was an event he wasn't pleased with. Timberlake is said to have been unaware that Spears would discuss their relationship in such detail in her book.
• After the memoir's release, Timberlake was seen traveling with his family but insiders claim that this was not to evade the limelight following the revelations in Spear's book, but a vacation planned months ahead. He is said to be 'supportive of Britney’s decision to put her truth out there'.
