Cambodia Inaugurates New Chinese-Funded Airport
The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, built at a cost of $1.1 billion, is set to boost tourism to the Angkor Wat temple complex.
- Cambodia inaugurated its newest and biggest airport, the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
- The airport, a Chinese-financed project, is designed to serve as an upgraded gateway to the country's major tourist attraction, the Angkor Wat temple complex.
- The airport is located about 40 kilometers east of Angkor Wat and can handle 7 million passengers a year, with plans to increase this to 12 million passengers annually from 2040.
- The airport was built at a cost of about $1.1 billion and was financed by Angkor International Airport (Cambodia) Co., Ltd., an affiliate of China's Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd, under a 55-year build-operate-transfer deal.
- Another Chinese-funded airport is being constructed at a cost of $1.5 billion to serve the capital, Phnom Penh, and is scheduled for completion in 2024.
