Carlos Vela Retires and Becomes LAFC’s First Club Ambassador

His new position will leverage his legacy to strengthen LAFC’s community ties.

Overview

  • Vela ends a 19-season career at 36 after playing a pivotal role in LAFC’s 2022 MLS Cup win and Supporters’ Shield titles in 2019 and 2022.
  • Signed in 2018 as the club’s inaugural Designated Player, he set the MLS single-season scoring record with 34 goals to earn the 2019 MVP and Golden Boot.
  • He finished with 78 goals and record-setting assist totals across 152 regular-season appearances, becoming LAFC’s all-time leader in goals, assists and games played.
  • Internationally, Vela earned 72 caps for Mexico from 2007 to 2018, scoring 19 goals and featuring in the 2010 and 2018 World Cups.
  • LAFC will host a “Carlos Vela Night” on September 21 before he officially begins duties as the team’s first Black & Gold ambassador.
