Centre Advances Northeast Waterway Development with Rs 1,000 Crore Boost

Overview

  • Over Rs 1,000 crore has been invested in Northeast inland waterways over the past two years, with Rs 300 crore worth of projects completed and Rs 700 crore on track for end-2025 delivery.
  • An additional Rs 1,000 crore is slated for investment by 2026 to further enhance waterway infrastructure in the region, including passenger and cargo terminals along the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers.
  • The Dredging Corporation of India has been tasked with maintaining a 2.5-metre draft on the Brahmaputra until 2026-27, supported by Rs 191 crore in dedicated funding.
  • Feasibility studies are underway for inland water transport and tourism development across multiple lakes and rivers in Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya.
  • Over Rs 1,500 crore has been earmarked for cruise tourism and cargo handling projects, including modern jetties and a Guwahati cruise terminal, with completion targeted by 2027-28.
