Charges Dropped Against Louisiana Trooper Clary; He Agrees to Testify in Ronald Greene Case

Charges dropped against Lt. John Clary, initially accused of concealing body camera footage during Ronald Greene's fatal 2019 arrest; Clary to testify against ex-colleague Master Trooper Kory York in case scrutinized for police brutality.

  • Louisiana State Trooper Lt. John Clary, originally charged with concealing body camera footage and obstruction of justice, has had charges against him dropped by District Attorney John Belton, in exchange for his testimony against ex-colleague Master Trooper Kory York in the Ronald Greene case.
  • Greene, a Black man, was fatally brutalized by police officers during his arrest in May 2019 although initial reports by the state police cited a car crash as the cause of death.
  • The body camera footage, attributed to Clary, depicted the troopers violently assaulting Greene following his failure to respond to a traffic violation, and leaving him shackled until he died.
  • Five officers were initially indicted in connection with Greene's death, but charges against three, including Clary, have been dismissed, leaving only York and another officer, Chris Harpen, to stand trial.
  • York, charged with negligent homicide, is alleged to have forced Greene to lie face-down in handcuffs for nearly 10 minutes, leading to restricted breathing and subsequent death.
