China Agreed to Pay Cuba Billions for Eavesdropping Station Targeting U.S. Communications, Officials Say

China has reached a secret deal to pay Cuba billions of dollars to build an electronic eavesdropping station on the island that would allow Chinese intelligence to monitor communications throughout the southeastern U.S., according to officials with knowledge of classified intelligence.
The Biden administration is concerned the potential outpost would pose a significant threat given its proximity to Florida.
Republicans have criticized the administration for failing to take stronger action against China and Cuba to prevent the station.
Cuba and China deny reaching an agreement to build such a facility.
If built, the station would amplify China’s ability to gather intelligence on U.S. military operations and commercial ship traffic.
