China Protests Treatment of Students at U.S. Entry Points

Dozens of Chinese students denied entry monthly, facing extensive interrogations and deportations, amid efforts to boost U.S.-China student exchanges

  • The Chinese government has lodged a protest with the U.S. over the treatment of Chinese students at U.S. entry points, with some students being interrogated for hours, having their electronic devices checked, and in some cases, being forcibly deported.
  • Chinese Ambassador in Washington, Xie Feng, reported that dozens of Chinese students have been denied entry every month for the past few months when returning to school from overseas travel or visiting relatives in China.
  • The protest comes as the U.S. and China are trying to boost student and other exchanges to improve their relations, which have become confrontational in recent years over trade, technology, human rights, and the future direction of the world.
  • Nearly 290,000 Chinese students are in the U.S., about one-third of the foreign students in the country. China has more than 1.3 million students studying abroad, more than any other country.
  • The actions of U.S. border control officers have been described as having a serious impact on the studies of international students from China and causing great psychological harm.
