Chinese Tourist Critically Injured While Leaning Out of Train in Sri Lanka for Photo

The 35-year-old woman suffered severe head and leg injuries after hitting a tunnel wall during a social media stunt on March 9.

The incident occurred on March 9, 2025, on the Nanu Oya–Badulla train route in Sri Lanka, near the 19th railway tunnel in Idalgashinna.
The tourist, a 35-year-old Chinese woman, leaned out of the moving train to take photos and hit her head against a tunnel wall, causing her to fall off the train.
She was rushed to Haputale Regional Hospital and later transferred to two other hospitals for specialized treatment; she remains in critical condition.
The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka issued a statement on March 10 urging tourists to avoid leaning out of train doors and to prioritize safety while traveling.
This is the latest in a series of similar accidents involving tourists in Sri Lanka, including a fatal incident involving a Russian tourist in February.
