Overview

  • Andra's revised estimate for the Cigéo project places costs between €26.1 billion and €37.5 billion, with inflation-adjusted projections reaching €32.8 to €45.3 billion.
  • The cost increase reflects a 4.4% to 50% rise from the €25 billion estimate set in 2016, driven by inflation, extended design studies, and technical complexities.
  • The Energy Minister will set the final reference cost by the end of 2025 following consultations with the Nuclear Safety Authority and waste producers.
  • The repository, planned for Bure at a depth of 500 meters, will store 83,000 m³ of highly radioactive waste over 95 years starting in 2050, with closure expected by 2170.
  • Environmental groups and local associations continue to oppose the project, which is financed by EDF, Orano, and CEA under the polluter-pays principle.
