Civil Rights Groups Report Rise in Harassment of Jewish and Muslim Communities Since Hamas Attacks

Significant increase in reported bias-related acts since October 7 includes physical violence and threats; council leaders state it's the largest wave of complaints since 2015, while anti-Semitic acts receive a nearly five-fold increase compared to same period in 2022.

  • Since the October 7 Hamas attacks, civil rights groups have reported significant increases in harassment, bias, and physical assaults against members of the Muslim and Jewish communities.
  • The American-Islamic Relations reported receiving 774 reports of bias-related acts from October 7 to October 24, marking the largest wave of complaints since December 2015.
  • The Anti-Defamation League recorded at least 312 reports of antisemitic acts between October 7 and October 23, nearly five times more than the same period in 2022, with acts ranging from graffiti and slurs to physical violence.
  • These antisemitic acts also include 109 instances of anti-Israel sentiments at rallies, some of which conveyed explicit or strong implicit support for Hamas and/or violence against Jews in Israel.
  • There have been reports of increases in antisemitic acts in the United Kingdom, France, and other countries across Europe, Latin America, and North Africa, with London police receiving 218 reports of antisemitic crimes from October 1 to October 18, a 13-fold increase from 2022.
