Congressman Proposes End to Military Cannabis Testing to Boost Recruitment

Rep. Matt Gaetz wants to ban required cannabis tests for members of the military to address recruitment shortages.
Gaetz proposed an amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act to end cannabis testing for enlistment or becoming an officer.
The military has seen a 33% increase in recruits testing positive for cannabis from 2020 to 2022.
The growing availability of CBD and hemp products has raised concerns about potential positive drug tests for soldiers.
Other proposals would allow VA doctors to provide medical opinions on cannabis use and permit consumption of legal CBD products.
