Connecticut Police Officer Charged with Assault and Cruelty for Repeatedly Tasing Suspect

Officer Nicholas Kehoss faces criminal charges for tasing Jarell Day, who was under suspicion for shoplifting, thrice despite pleas; comes under scrutiny for previous disciplinary actions.

  • Naugatuck police officer Nicholas Kehoss was charged with third-degree assault and cruelty after he was caught on body camera video tasing the suspect, Jarell Day, three times.
  • The incident took place on October 14, when Day was suspected of stealing $200 worth of beer from a grocery store in Naugatuck, Connecticut, eventually leading to a chase where Officer Kehoss intercepted Day.
  • After catching up to Day, Kehoss tased him three times in relatively quick succession, despite Day showing his hands, apologizing, and eventually pleading for the officer to stop.
  • Day, who was not injured in the incident, faced charges including robbery, larceny, interfering with an officer/resisting, reckless driving and disobeying the signal of an officer. He was released on a $200,000 bond.
  • Officer Kehoss has previously been disciplined by the Naugatuck Police Department several times over his 13-year tenure, including a suspension in August 2022 for a traffic stop manoeuvre, and in another incident in 2017 where his report claimed his vehicle was hit but video evidence suggested otherwise.
  • Officer Kehoss was released on a $50,000 bond, with a court appearance scheduled for November 8, and is currently on paid leave pending the investigations.
