Court Dismisses Allegations Against François Bayrou in Bétharram Abuse Case

Two reports accusing the French Prime Minister of inaction during his tenure as Education Minister were deemed insufficient to warrant further investigation.

  • The Cour de justice de la République (CJR) has closed two reports against François Bayrou alleging failure to address abuse claims at a Catholic school during his time as Education Minister from 1993 to 1997.
  • The CJR concluded that there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges, stating no infraction within its jurisdiction could be established based on the available information.
  • A separate investigation in Pau remains active, focusing on allegations of obstruction of justice and concealment of crimes related to the same school.
  • The Bétharram case involves 152 reported allegations of abuse, including 70 of a sexual nature, many of which are now beyond the statute of limitations.
  • Bayrou, whose children attended the school and whose wife taught there, has repeatedly denied knowledge of the alleged incidents during his tenure.
