A US study found metformin reduced long Covid risk by 40% when taken after testing positive.
The study covered over 1,000 people and compared metformin to ivermectin, fluvoxamine and a placebo.
Metformin costs $11 for 14 tablets and works across ages, groups and COVID variants like omicron.
The study did not test if metformin treats long COVID, only prevents it, especially if taken within 3 days of symptoms.
Ivermectin and fluvoxamine were found ineffective at preventing long COVID in the same study.
