Overview

• As part of a reform to its moderation policies, Discord is introducing a warning system and safety measures for teenagers to combat online harm, moving away from previously used permanent bans.
• For minor rule violations, users will now receive an in-app warning from Discord and a temporary restriction on specific features rather than outright banning, with more serious offenses leading to a one-year ban instead of a permanent one.
• Along with the new warning system, Discord is also introducing a Teen Safety Assist feature that will blur potentially inappropriate content in direct messages and scan messages for inappropriate content, a move made to safeguard particularly young users on the platform.
• The new system attempts to educate users about their mistakes and help them recognise misbehaviour, with hopes of turning them into upstanding online citizens, departing from the conventional 'three strikes and you’re out' method.
• Discord's new moderation tools are part of an overall push to make the platform safer, which includes adding more transparency into Discord interventions and informing the users about policy violations to rectify their behavior.
