"Divergent" Author Veronica Roth Accepts Film Series Completion Despite Scrapped Final Movie

Veronica Roth, author of the "Divergent" series, finds peace in the decision not to make final film as she feels movies followed a different track than her novels; book splitting trend, once all the rage, also criticised.

  • Veronica Roth, author of the Divergent series, expressed her peace with the final film adaptation of the book series never materializing. The final book, 'Allegiant,' was initially planned to be split into two films, a trend popular at the time, but part two never made it on screen
  • Roth noted that the film adaptations were veering off track from her novels, stating, 'if you change the lead-up, you change the ending.' She accepted the unfinished series, feeling it somewhat complete despite the lack of a final movie
  • The alleged trend of splitting final books into two films when adapting them for the screen was criticized. Roth mentioned this decision usually only makes sense for 'a big, long book.' While splitting a book into two films was a significant aspect of other franchises like 'Harry Potter,' 'Twilight,' and 'The Hunger Games,' it has since received critique, including from the 'Hunger Games' director
  • Roth's books, turned films, followed protagonist Tris, played by Shailene Woodley, in her fight against a dystopian society divided into factions. Despite the unresolved film series, Roth felt her characters continue to live on in her imagination
  • There was also an attempt to wrap up the Divergent series with a TV movie and a spinoff series, but those plans did not materialize. Roth continues to be honored by the legacy the Divergent series - both in text and film - has left behind, despite the various challenges
