An elevator at a platinum mine in Rustenburg, South Africa, suddenly dropped about 200 meters (656 feet), killing 11 workers and injuring 75.
The incident occurred on Monday evening at the end of the workers' shift.
Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) CEO Nico Muller described the event as 'the darkest day in the history of Implats.'
All mining operations at the mine have been suspended pending an investigation into the cause of the accident.
South Africa had 49 fatalities from all mining accidents in 2022, a decrease from 74 the year before.
