EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Attend UK's AI Safety Summit

Despite notable absences of other world leaders, the summit seeking to address potential risks from artificial intelligence will proceed with representations from the EU, the US and the UN; tech companies OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic also set to participate.

  • The AI Safety Summit organized by UK's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will see participation from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The second day of the summit will focus on how AI impacts national security.
  • Despite some prominent world leaders such as President Joe Biden and President Emmanuel Macron declining to attend, US Vice President Kamala Harris, UN Secretary General António Guterres and some notable tech leaders from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic will be present.
  • The goal of the summit is to kickstart an international dialogue on AI regulation and address the unpredictable advances in AI technology and the potential for humans to lose control over it.
  • China's participation in the summit is yet unknown; former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has expressed safety concerns over China's invitation.
  • AI companies attending the summit, such as OpenAI, have published their safety policies and measures to protect against what they describe as “catastrophic risks” such as chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats posed by advanced AI.
