EU Reports Significant Decline in Asylum Applications, Led by Germany

The number of asylum applications in the EU dropped by 11% in 2024, with Germany experiencing a nearly 30% decrease, according to the EUAsylum Agency's annual report.

A total of 1,014,000 asylum applications were registered in the EU, Norway, and Switzerland in 2024, marking a decline of 100,000 from the previous year.
Germany saw the most substantial drop, with 237,000 applications—92,000 fewer than in 2023—representing a decrease of nearly 30%.
Syria remained the top country of origin for asylum seekers, followed by Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Turkey, although numbers from most countries declined.
The EU's overall asylum acceptance rate held steady at 42%, with nearly half of applications coming from countries with high rejection rates, such as Bangladesh, Morocco, and Tunisia.
The EU's external migration policies, including partnerships with North African nations, have significantly restricted migration routes, particularly from crisis regions in Africa and the Middle East.
