EU to Impose Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods Following New Steel and Aluminum Duties

The European Union announces countermeasures targeting $26 billion in U.S. exports after the U.S. implements 25% tariffs on EU metal imports.

The U.S. has enacted 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the EU, affecting $26 billion worth of exports, approximately 5% of EU exports to the U.S.
In response, the EU plans to introduce tariffs on American products, including bourbon whiskey, jeans, motorcycles, and peanut butter, starting in April.
EU countermeasures will initially target $8 billion worth of U.S. goods, with an additional $16 billion potentially subject to tariffs after consultations in mid-April.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized the U.S. tariffs, warning of disrupted supply chains, economic uncertainty, and rising prices in both regions.
While the EU is preparing strong but proportional measures, von der Leyen emphasized a willingness to negotiate with the U.S. to avoid further economic strain.
