Family Sues Florida Retirement Community Over Fatal Alligator Attack

The lawsuit alleges negligence by the community's management for not warning residents about a known alligator, leading to the death of 85-year-old Gloria Serge.

85-year-old Gloria Serge was killed by a 10-foot, 700-pound alligator while walking her dog at Spanish Lakes Fairways, a retirement community in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Feb. 20, 2023.
The alligator, known to residents and staff as 'Henry', was regularly fed by maintenance workers and was a known presence in the community.
The Serge family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Wynne Building Corporation, the company that owns and manages Spanish Lakes Fairways, accusing them of negligence for not warning residents of the alligator's presence.
According to the lawsuit, Gloria Serge was 'encouraged, if not forced,' to walk her dog near the water where the alligator was, as she had previously received an eviction warning for walking her dog in 'non-approved areas'.
The family is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.
