FDA Approves Blood Test to Predict Severe Pre-eclampsia in Pregnant Women

The FDA approved a blood test to identify pregnant women at high risk of developing pre-eclampsia,a life-threatening pregnancy complication.
The blood test measures two proteins produced by the placenta and is up to 96% accurate in predicting pre-eclampsia within two weeks.
Pre-eclampsia disproportionately affects Black women and can contribute to maternal death.
There is currently no treatment for pre-eclampsia other than delivering the baby.
The new blood test provides an early warning and can help determine which women will progress to severe pre-eclampsia.
