FDA Warns Against 'Gas Station Heroin'; Bipartisan Legislation Introduced to Crack Down on Tianeptine

Neptune Resources voluntarily recalls all remaining lots of Neptune's Fix, a product containing the unregulated drug tianeptine, following FDA's warning of severe side effects.

  • FDA issues warning against the use of tianeptine, commonly known as 'gas station heroin', due to severe side effects including seizures, loss of consciousness and death.
  • Neptune Resources, the manufacturer of Neptune's Fix, a product containing tianeptine, has agreed to voluntarily recall all remaining lots of the product.
  • FDA's warning comes amid bipartisan legislation introduced by Reps. Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) and August Pfluger (R-Texas) to crack down on the abuse and distribution of tianeptine.
  • The proposed bill, STAND Against Emerging Opioids Act, aims to add tianeptine to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act, making it illegal to sell without a prescription.
  • Despite not being approved for use in the U.S., tianeptine is often sold illegally as a dietary supplement, marketed as a treatment for various conditions including anxiety, depression, and pain.
