Florida Lawmakers Convene Special Session for New Sanctions on Iran, Express Support for Israel

Four-day special session to begin on Nov. 6, pushed by Governor Ron DeSantis, aims to increase protection for Jewish communities in the state following Hamas attacks on Israel, and address additional issues including hurricane relief and property insurance.

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for a special legislative session starting November 6 to impose additional sanctions on Iran in response to attacks on Israel by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hamas.
Despite no global government providing direct evidence that Iran orchestrated the Hamas attacks, the special session's agenda also includes supporting Israel and enhancing security measures for Jewish institutions in Florida.
The special session will address other topical issues such as hurricane relief, property insurance, and funding increase for special needs students.
Florida already imposes sanctions on companies doing direct business with Iran and six other countries of concern, including China, Russia, and Cuba, similar to the sanctions imposed by the U.S. federal government for decades.
The move comes after Governor DeSantis took several actions to support Israel, including a state of emergency declaration, organizing return flights for Floridians in Israel, and sending supplies to the country.
Democratic House Leader Fentrice Driskell hinted at political motives behind DeSantis' call for a special session, suggesting the governor may be using the legislation to boost his presidential campaign.
