For-Hire Driver Charged with Manslaughter in Passenger's Death

Sergio Zamora Mendoza, a 33-year-old for-hire driver, was arrested on Friday and charged with manslaughter and assault following the death of passenger Carlos Guaman.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning after a fare dispute. Mendoza allegedly punched Guaman and his cousin, leaving them unconscious on the street before driving away.
The attack was captured on a doorbell camera. Guaman was pronounced dead at Maimonides Medical Center, while his cousin remains in critical but stable condition.
The taxi involved was not an Uber, Lyft or yellow cab.
Neighbors expressed shock at the violent incident, noting that such events are rare in their typically quiet neighborhood.
