Andrew Lyons Receives 30-Day Jail Term, Marking a Rare Conviction for an On-Duty Shooting in Los Angeles County
- Former Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy Andrew Lyons has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Ryan Twyman in 2019.
- Lyons pleaded no contest to assault with a firearm and assault under color of authority. He was originally charged with voluntary manslaughter.
- Under the plea deal, Lyons will also be on probation for two years and his officer certification has been revoked, meaning he can no longer serve in law enforcement in California.
- The case marks the first time in roughly two decades that an L.A. County law enforcement officer has been sentenced to jail or prison for an on-duty shooting.
- Lyons was one of two deputies who fired a total of 34 rounds at Twyman's car. The second deputy did not face charges.
