Former Left-Wing Extremists Arrested in Berlin After Returning to Face Trial
Two men accused of planning a 1995 bombing in Berlin have returned from Venezuela to stand trial after decades abroad.
- Peter K. and Thomas W., alleged former members of the left-wing extremist group 'Das Komitee,' were arrested upon arrival at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Wednesday night.
- The men are accused of plotting a 1995 bomb attack on a Berlin detention center being converted into a deportation facility, which was thwarted by police intervention.
- The suspects fled Germany after the failed attack and were granted asylum in Brazil, while a third accomplice, now deceased, was located in Venezuela years later.
- Following negotiations with German prosecutors, the men agreed to return voluntarily to face trial, which begins March 17 and is expected to conclude by April 8.
- If they plead guilty, the defendants may receive a suspended sentence as part of a pre-trial agreement.
