Former NFL Player Sergio Brown Denied Pretrial Release in Mother's Murder Case
Sergio Brown accused of fraudulent movements including fleeing to Mexico, concealing evidence and burning fabric on his mother's day of death; with DNA evidence and cellphone records linking him directly to the murder.
- Former NFL player, Sergio Brown, has been accused of first-degree murder and concealing a homicide related to the death of his mother, Myrtle Brown. His pretrial release was denied due to him being deemed a flight risk and a threat to the community.
- Prosecutors alleged that Brown was the last person seen with his mother, was seen burning fabric the night of her death on September 14, and had booked a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, the next day.
- Evidence collected by the police included blood on Myrtle’s back patio, DNA samples from under her fingernails which matched a toothbrush in Brown’s bedroom, and cellphone records placing Brown and his mother at the same location during the estimated time of her death.
- Public defender Robert Fox argues that the case against Brown is all circumstantial, as there were no eyewitnesses to the alleged crime.
- Myrtle Brown's body was found in a creek less than 100 yards from her home after she and Brown were reported missing. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide due to multiple injuries from an assault.
- Brown was taken into custody in San Diego, California, upon 're-entering' the United States from Mexico.
