Former Red Army Faction Militant Daniela Klette Goes on Trial in Germany

Klette faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, and illegal weapons possession after decades in hiding, with the trial expected to last two years.

  • Daniela Klette, 66, a former member of the far-left Red Army Faction (RAF), is on trial in Celle, Germany, after evading authorities for over 30 years.
  • She is accused of participating in 13 armed robberies between 1999 and 2016, stealing approximately 2.7 million euros to fund her life in hiding.
  • Prosecutors have also linked Klette to three attacks in the 1990s, including an attempted assault on a Deutsche Bank building and an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Bonn.
  • Klette was arrested in February 2024 in Berlin, where she had been living under a fake identity and was found in possession of weapons, explosives, and cash.
  • Authorities continue to search for her alleged accomplices, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, who remain at large and are wanted on similar charges.
