Former San Jose State University Sports Medicine Director Sentenced to Two Years for Groping Student-Athletes
Scott Shaw Admits to Violating Civil Rights of Four Female Athletes, Faces Additional Penalties Including Supervised Release and Fine
- Scott Shaw, the former director of sports medicine at San Jose State University, has been sentenced to two years in prison for groping female student-athletes under the pretense of providing medical care.
- Shaw was arrested and charged with civil rights counts in March 2022, and pleaded guilty in August after a trial that ended in a deadlocked jury.
- Shaw admitted to touching the breasts and buttocks of four student-athletes without a medical reason and without their consent. The incidents occurred between 2017 and 2020.
- Shaw was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release after his prison term, and to pay a $15,000 fine. A hearing to determine issues related to restitution is scheduled for February 6, 2024.
- San Jose State University agreed in 2021 to pay $1.6 million to 13 female student-athletes whose complaints about being sexually touched were mishandled.
