The Independent National Instance for Recognition and Reparation (Inirr) has received 1,580 victim reports since its 2021 creation, with 1,235 actively supported and 345 awaiting assistance.
Recent media coverage of systemic abuse at Notre-Dame de Bétharram and revelations about Abbé Pierre led to 31 new cases in February 2025, tripling the monthly average.
Victim demographics show a decreasing average age, indicating more recent abuse cases from the 1970s to 1990s are being reported.
The Inirr has provided financial reparations averaging €38,430 per victim, with a maximum of €60,000, alongside psychological support and restorative justice measures.
With the Inirr’s mandate set to expire in less than 18 months, concerns grow over the sustainability of support for survivors and potential institutional reforms.
